The Vancouver Giants lost their second in a row, falling 5-3 to the Seattle Thunderbirds at the ShoWare Centre on Saturday night. Carter Popoff had a pair of power play goals for the G-Men while Travis McEvoy scored his second goal in as many nights as well.
Keegan Kolesar opened the scoring for Seattle just over two minutes into the game with a power play marker that trickled across the goal line and into the Vancouver net. Seth Swenson doubled the lead for the T-Birds shortly thereafter when he walked into the slot and fired a shot that beat Payton Lee on the glove side. The Giants pulled to within one when McEvoy knocked a rebound past Seattle goalie Justin Myles. The play was reviewed as it looked like McEvoy may have kicked the puck in, but the goal was allowed to stand. Seattle went ahead 3-1 before the end of the stanza when Shea Theodore scored on a long shot from the blue line.
The teams traded goals in the second. The Thunderbirds extended their lead to 4-1 when Roberts Lipsbergs shoveled the puck between Lee’s legs on a strange play at the Vancouver goal mouth, but the Giants responded when Popoff wired a rebound into a yawning cage on the power play.
Popoff found the net again on a power play early in the third when he beat Myles cleanly with a nice wrister from the left circle. The Giants pressed the Thunderbirds, outshooting Seattle 11-5 in the final frame, but the G-Men couldn’t find a tying goal, and Swenson sealed the win for Seattle with an empty netter in the final minute.
The Giants will return to action tomorrow night when they continue their road trip in Kamloops against the Blazers. The puck drop is set for 6:00pm with the Pre-Game Show beginning at 5:30pm on TEAM 1040 and http://teamradio.ca.
